April 2005 Workouts
I've begun training for hiking and backpacking for our upcoming trip up North. I will use the YMCA when I cannot do that. Maybe I'll slip in a bike ride here and there. But I want to avoid the severe knee pain I've experienced on long, rugged hikes. I also want to be able to backpack, which I've never done.
I began using Ian's internal frame pack. I later switched to my external frame pack. The stats representing hikes where I used the internal frame pack seem to include the weight of the empty pack in the "pack weight". I don't see a note of the empty pack's weight.
Week 14 - Apr 4th through 10th, 2005
Vacation Monday

Backpacking for 1 h 10 m in the Bluffs using the internal frame pack

Note: trainer recommended against elliptical trainer after I did it, saying it placed too much strain on the knees
Friday, April 8th
Backpacking for about 1/2 hour in the Bluffs.
Note: Would have hiked longer, but encountered a smoldering tree and had to hurry off to the fire department (there'd been a controlled burn that apparently was not 100% controlled).

Sunday, April 10th
Hike on Crooked Lake Trail with Stacie and her dog Mission for 2.5 hours.
Used my external frame pack this time (it weighs 6 lbs). Was worried about length of hike and thought the trail would involve more hills than the Bluffs, so packed light.
Trail usually takes me 2 hours, but we had to stop a lot to secure the dog when we ran into bikers, runners, and other hikers.
Packed backpack weight 25 lbs.
Pack contents 19 lbs
Hike felt very easy - was not tired at the end. Probably due in part to the lightness of the pack and in part to so much stopping. Only had some shoulder strain.
I had intended to carry less weight, but was very surprised to learned that I had carried so little. Although this hike was no test whatsoever of my ability to carry a significant weight, it was a benchmark of sorts. I can obviously increase the weight quite a bit to give myself a better workout.

Note: Got email from Brendan cautioning me that incorrect backpacking training would be worse than no training, and also that hills can be problematic. So am now going back to the Y to work on knee strengthening and general fitness.
