Impressions of Ride

This was an personal best for me in the area of speed vs distance. I had not intended this to be a speed workout, because I was just biking to a barbecue since I'd wanted to bike anyhow, and the barbecue was starting soon. However, I noticed that my cyclometer was not set correctly to measure the mileage of this ride, and I didn't want to stop to correct the problem. So I started just keeping an eye on the average miles per hour. After awhile I noticed that this number was higher than I was accustomed to seeing, so I began actually working towards bumping the number up.

When I reached the intersection of Mast and Huron River Drive, the average mph was 16.8. That was pretty high compared to any other ride I'd done. As I hit Dexter-Chelsea, which was open road with plenty of miles to increase this number, I watched as it slowly but surely climbed. I was thrilled with each new high, and at some point after 17.4 or so couldn't imagine that there were enough miles left in the ride to raise that number any higher, and I was also beginning to feel tired. But I ended with 17.6, which totally surprised and thrilled me!

Caveat

When you do the math using the miles I rode and the time it took me, the average mph comes out more like 16.8 or 16.9. However, the reading I got from the cyclometer was 17.6. So I am not sure whether the cyclometer is incorrect, or whether the cyclometer's definition of current average mph is more of a moving average than an overall average.
